Claudia Böse studied painting at Central St. Martins and the Royal Academy Schools in London. She has since won many commissions and prizes, as well as being awarded artistic residencies in Germany, Poland, Ireland, Spain and England and has established herself as a successful painter in a series of exhibitions throughout Europe. The dynamic work reflects her interest in complex collisions of place, personality, history and landscape. After finishing her studies she chose to return to the former East Germany to gain insight into the impact of reunification onto the Romantic landscape of Rügen, the chalk island made famous by Caspar David Friedrich that enchanted Adolf Hitler and Erich Honecker alike. In response she produced the highly relevant and pertinent series of paintings shown at Highgate Gallery for the first time in its entirety. ‘You Then, You Now' is inspired by comparing actual appearances of the island of Rügen, as well as Berlin, with their representations, testing the limits of observation and of the subject, moving between representational, imaginary and optical as well as decorative modes. This work will be on show at the Highgate Gallery, 6-19 June. Claudia Böse currently lives and works in Suffolk.
