‘High Risk’ Birth Manifesto Zine Making

This workshop is designed for participants to manually make a zine expressing their views and lived experience on birth for people categorised as ‘high risk’ during their pregnancy.

The artist SLQS together with midwife Lucinda Rae create a safe and mindful space where individual zines are made and collectively shared. The techniques include writing, collage, drawing and mindfulness practices.

Zine making is accessible to anyone without previous experience and has been used historically for self publishing giving voice to marginalised communities.

SLQS is a multi-disciplinary artist living in London who presented work at Totally Thames, Rich Mix, LADA, UKNA amongst others. This workshop is inspired by her work ‘HBAC Performance Manifesto’, written from SLQS’s personal experience of being pregnant and not given access to a home birth, having previously had a caesarean.

Lucinda Rae is a passionate and experienced midwife, living in West Berkshire, where she currently works both independently, and in the NHS. In her career so far she has worked on busy, London labour wards and in wild and remote Shetland. She is at her very best and happiest as an independent midwife, working alongside families for the whole journey of pregnancy, birth and early parenthood.
