Ruth geldard, ‘To Augment ll’, Sculpture/Assemblage, 2011. Photo: Colin Bowling. Materials: taxidermy; peacock, rooster, duck, marabou and pheasant feathers, lamp stand, silk, padding, paint.Part of an installation based on the verb: To Augment relating to the largely feminine practices of hair and nail extention and the use of prosthetics to enlarge and augment the female body, in line with cultural ideals and expectations. Inspiration for these pieces came initially from the notion of women using parts of other women, for exmple, hair, to enhance their own feminine appearance.
