Wide Open is a sculpture made using wire mesh, paper mache and pigmented plaster. It implies an obscurity and an ambiguity which resonates with the viewer. The inspiration comes from an exploration into Fraisthorpe beach which is the location for a number of large inert concrete anti-invasion defences yet used to be a nudist beach. The piece perhaps explores the more explicit nature of the beach referencing the nude body with its form and colour. However it is predominantly the contrast between subtle and dense which has inspired this inert skin toned, arrestingly imposing sculpture.
