Cok'in

Fabienne Chassin, ‘Cok’in’, Printed cotton jersey, June 2009. Photo: David Lawson. Fabienne Chassin designed and printed this ‘cocoon’ that she describes as a private space with a public exterior.  The exterior print depicts the British phrase ‘Coals to Newcastle’ whilst the interior print represents a roughly equivalent French phrase ‘Peigner la girafe’.  This also means  ‘to work pointlessly and laboriously’ but with an additional sarcastic overtone in French which also implies ‘to have actually done nothing at all’ as well as suggesting ‘masturbation’.  A humerous take on misunderstandings caused by the language barrier using wordplay and double-entendre have been the focus of Fabienne Chassin’s 10º project work.
