Northern Print’s International Print Biennale has announced the five winners of its Print Awards, which this year include the new Bryan Robertson Trust Award.

The inaugural Bryan Robertson prize has been awarded to Bob and Roberta Smith, who receives £6,000. This is the first time the UK artist and art education advocate has received a cash award for his work: “It’s amazing to win this prize!” he said. His winning piece is a Lithograph print of Guardian columnist Susanne Moore, part of a series of prints of feminist icons commissioned by Paupers Press.

US artist Ellen Heck was awarded the Northern Print International Residency Prize for non-UK based artists, as well as the V&A Print prize. Her 2012 print, Timita as Frida, part of a series of prints depicting women and girls dressed as Frida Kahlo, will be included in the V&A’s permanent collection and featured on its website.

London-based Dutch artist Marcelle Hanselaar has won the Clifford Chance Purchase Prize, which includes the opportunity to show work at the law firm’s Canary Wharf offices. Montreal-based artist Julie Roch-Cuerrier has been awarded the National Glass Centre Residency Prize to explore techniques in glass and print. UK printmaker Trevor Banthorpe has won the Northern Print Collaborative Prize, the chance to create new work alongside master printmaker Kip Gresham at The Print Studio Cambridge.

Award winners were selected from a shortlist of 37 international artists by a panel comprising: Stephen Coppel, curator of the Modern Collection, Department of Prints and Drawings, British Museum; artist David Nash RA; and Susan Tallman, editor–in-chief, Art in Print, Chicago, USA.

The International Print Biennale continues at Hatton Gallery, Northern Print, and venues across Newcastle and the North East until 8 August. internationalprintbiennale.org.uk
