The Cenote Ring is a solo exhibition of recent works by multimedia artist Paola Estrella. Following a collaborative performance at Stone Nest, HS Projects presents the paintings at the heart of the project.
Comprising two distinct, yet intricately connected parts, The Cenote Ring constitutes the artist’s interpretation of the unique geological formations in her native Mexico, which have served as a source of wonder and inspiration for generations of explorers and storytellers.
Estrella perceives the underwater landscapes as sites of myth, memory and transformation, depicting the otherworldly atmosphere of the overgrown sinkholes in layers of vibrant textures and forms. The digital elements of the recent performance reconnected the cenotes with the asteroids that created hem billions of years ago. The paintings capture the natural beauty of the caves, their unique characteristics and narratives connecting into sites of ecological and spiritual sonority.
The Cenote Ring describes the bond between the earth and the universe, past and future, nature and humans.
The Cenote Ring is a two-part project by multimedia artist Paola Estrella, unfolding across distinct spaces and mediums to explore the cenotes—natural sinkholes formed by the impact of an asteroid over 66 million years ago. Scattered across the Yucatán Peninsula, these interconnected sites make up the geological formation known as the Cenote Ring.
Bridging collaboration, ritual, and storytelling, the project comprises a collaborative performance at Stone Nest, London and a solo painting exhibition at 5 Howick Place, London. Though presented separately, both are conceptually intertwined—inviting audiences to move between myth and material, the ephemeral and the pictorial.
This project has been made possible thanks to support from HS Projects, Arts Council National Lottery Project Grants, and Artists Make Space Programme at Orleans House Gallery.
