An interactive visual arts exhibition by disabled artist Lydia Popowich is based on a traditional board game and launches in the Far North before touring venues around Scotland including Shetland and Edinburgh. Disability Pursuits consists of eight painted panels depicting different aspects of Lydia’s journey through life in a disabling society and focuses on experiences in work, leisure, home, money, sex, health, friendship and education. Spectators of the work are invited to take part in a series of ‘games’ using a roulette wheel and magnetic counters. The show is supported by Scottish Arts Council National Lottery Fund to increase awareness of disability issues and to promote a Disability Arts Forum with a networking website. Disability Arts is concerned with expressing how disabled people see the world and also how the world sees disabled people. Free art and photography workshops will take place in Thurso inspired by the exhibition. They will look at issues of identity, self-esteem and body image by exploring self-portraits through a series of three sessions culminating in a celebration event.
