100 teapots

I made 25 so far, and I noticed that I have to keep focused on the throwing of each one , not to rush into increasing the number. In the last batch a few were a bit uneven and may be it will show when fired. I have also accepted a few with minor cracks in the gallery, because other features where interesting, but I feel at the end they will be discarded. I am getting an idea of what I like, and now I have to perfect it but keep trying new things as well. I have found a new way of enjoying my obsession with double wall throwing, I am not sure if very practical in a handle, though. I get a lot of excitement from friends about this project and a few want to help me photograph them.

I don’t think I am focusing on one aspect of teapots at a time, I am trying to make a balanced teapot in every case experimenting with handles, spouts and knobs on lids.

I am trying to be true to Takeshi Yasuda’s teaching not to judge them untill I have 100, and then i will group them according to their looks and then progress into a more informed and purposeful making.

This week I have made only 3 pots and then I cut a finger so I have to pause (can’t throw without my first finger!)

I tryed thinner handles and double walled handles. This thing about the balance intrigues me and annoys me. I keep thinking it is a personal judgement, but there seem to be some Universal principles about it that I don’t spontaneously see.

In this month I have made my first 10 teapots. I found I had to keep an open mind not to try for a particular shape, I want to have only the weight of 1kg of clay as a point of departure and I will glaze them all the same to be able to judge them easily. A friend did the first feedback session just feeling the handles to see if they were comfortable for her. The comment is that they should allow the whole width of the hand in the loop, and the handle should be wider. This is a problem as every hand is different! For me the most important thing is to make a teapot with personality a cute spout and a balanced handle…
