Failure and the family

The eldest seeks support and approval by treading, and surpassing, a familiar path. The second reacts against, and is free to seek their own. Without parental support she makes the first pioneering leap away from the path, but finds it harder to surpass that leap, into the success comparable to the eldest. She later starts to stare at failure. She eventually comforts herself in knowing that she is able to support her own offspring in this new direction, potentially surpassing her own.
