Myself and Peter the sound engineer for the project have met and discussed what is going to be possible to create inside the vacant shop unit that we have secured, paying close attention to the budget that we have available.

This is the part of a project where I wish I had studied carpentry or had more knowledge of DIY.

Peter has done a great sketch up of what the end result could look like (pictured). It seems just as important to get the look of a sound installation right as well as the feel of it.

The audience experience needs to be finely tuned – we’re catering to people who love to explore events with new music and new literature.

This is the first draft of the sketch so we’ll see what the artists think.

The challenge has been set – to build an inner / outer type structure to house a sound installation. The project I am working on is artistically directed by a writer and a composer and will be part of the Birmingham Book Festival.

The structure needs to stand on top of an old shop counter that has an octagon shape at its base with a circular top.

This needs careful consideration, there are lots of elements that need to come together at this point in the project so that costs stay realistic, so risks can be assessed and planned into the design as well as trying to find out what the sound installation is even going to sound like in such a structure.

I am excited about the convergence of all these things at this stage in the project and also daunted. It’s the unpredicatable nature of the challenges that lie ahead that are exhilirating my problem solving brain and worrying my cautious nature.

I’ll be blogging about the developments of the structure as the plans unfold.
