The United Nations has declared that 2016 is the International Year of Pulses. In celebration of this I’ll be artist in residence in 3 schools and creating a new series of paintings titled ‘The Bean Scrolls’

I have often thought about observing a crop from seed to harvest and decided this would be the perfect year for doing it.My husband is an arable farmer and will be planting a 90 acre crop of beans this spring, so I have chosen my spot and await for the field to dry untilĀ  it’s ready for drilling.

Thanks to support from BEPA, PGRO and Derby City Council I’ll be growing beans and creating bean artwork with children in schools.Dates for the school visits have been set, seed trays purchased just a weeks preparation left before we begin.

The Bean Project started in the three schools with studying the seeds and drawing in charcoal and pastels. Even the youngest children were very focused drawing the shapes and patterns on the different varieties of beans. I am always surprised and delighted by children’s drawings their sense of wonder and natural capacity to create. We planted trays and pots of beans ready to observe their growth over the next couple of months. At Little Explorers Forest School Nursery the Polytunnel has started to transform with raised beds planted with beans and one left for digging. Children visit in groups to draw, plant, paint and dig, even the babies visit too.
