Once I had covered the body of the robot in paper maché, I left the sculpture to dry over night.
The following day I decided to work on the helmet of the robot. I was originally going to have the helmet in a circular shape, but after having discussions with my peers and mentor, I decided that it would look better if the helmet was a square shape, like the rest of the robot.
So I started with a box, which I then modified and put in the mouth hole, I also measured and allowed the space where the eyes would be, to fit the dimensions of the portable dvd player I had ordered.
Here are a couple of images of the helmet in progress.

One of the problems that I had with the structure was that the masking tape would not hold everything together. This was only temporary, as I had previously thought that if I used paper maché this would help to strengthen the sculpture.
So I mixed wood glue with water and started using newspaper cuttings to maché onto the packaging. I used wood glue as it would be stronger than p.v.a glue.
Here are some images of how the work was progressing.
The next step of the process was to start fixing cardboard to the wooden frame. All the cardboard packaging I used, I got from the student shop.
I wanted this sculpture to be made entirely from recycled materials, so it was important that I used packaging that would have been thrown away.
As I applied the packaging to the structure, I had to think about what pieces would fit where, as I didn’t want to cut up the boxes unless I had to. Whilst I was doing this, I used masking tape to hold each piece together.
Here are some images showing how the structure started to develop.
The Birth of Consumer-Bot
Using my initial design of the inner structure of the robot, I was able to sketch a wooden structure based on the measurements of me, for a scale I could work with.
Once I had these measurements I started to cut some timber to size, which I got from my dads shed of unused off-cuts.
I used a square piece of chipboard painted white, which would be the base of the robot, and this would give me something to build and fix the skeleton too.
So I started to assemble the inner structure based on my measurements, I felt that it would be easier to scale the robot if I based the measurements on my leg height, waist height, shoulders and so on…..
