More drawings from the book “Toys from the Avant-Garde”

I specially had a interest in the toys of Pablo Picasso, the hand puppets of Paul Klee and the carved wood finger puppets from an unknown artist.

These are the drawings I made from the book “Toys of the Avant-Garde” by Jose Lebrero Stals published by Museo Picasso Malaga. My tutor lent me this book and I absolutely loved it. The exhibition was on last Summer in Malaga in the Museum Picasso. The show showcased the toys made by famous artists and others unknown, in the first half of the twentieth century.

From the moment I saw this book it reminded me a lot of the work that I would do in my Illustration course 4 years ago and following years, I couldn’t resist the nostalgia. To come across this book was a “meant to be” kind of personal encounter. My work in the last two months has been a bit made with a kind of toy/characterisation approach.

For my degree show I have in mind this puppet show kind of stage in my mind, loads of fabric sewn sculptures and colourful drawings. A kind of a theatre or puppet show reflecting in the irony in life.

Drawings from observation using the iron board that I deconstructed, viewed from different angles and perspectives. I feel this way of working has a lot of potential as this opens a new line of enquiry and ideas for creating new work. Drawing is essential in my practice. It keeps things moving when I’m not sure what to make or where to go next. I like the way that the graph paper makes contrast again the lines.

I have been challenging myself to create something completely new using the iron boards, not just using the ironboard itself as I did last year, but using the ironboard to make new work. In my last work I have used the iron board legs as a standing base for the, let’s called it, a weird bird. Post to come in a bit.

I feel my writing is rubbish, not sure if I’m reading too much into what I do, If I’m being critical enogh, but I’m properly panicking now, as I have a month and a half left for degree show and I’m not sure what to make!!!!

aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh (panic scream)

This is how I feel at the moment with my blog. I’m sorry if the continuity hasn’t been kept and I jump between blogs rescuing thoughts, results, plans from previous months!

I’m feeling curious again about expression and how I can describe emotion in my work. I thought these two women had very charateristic features and I found them somehow hilariuosly funny. I thought this could be a good excercise to create narrative from…
