No sewing please, Paper mache experimenting…

At the beginning of the term back in beginning of October I started playing with cardboard and papier mache. I have been using fabrics for so many years that I have been advised by different tutors that I should really start using different materials and to experiment with them. So that’s what I did.

The result of playing with cardboard and papier mache ended up as a flower? shape with pointy petals, a very pretty shape I thought. However the papier mache although interesting to use was taking a lot time to dry also the whole progress of applying layers can be quite boring.

I wasn’t happy with the result, or better to say I wasn’t impressed, so I start experimenting further. I covered it with a mesh bath sponge, ummm…. not impressed, although the texture and the little wholes like honey pannels added an attractive asthetic, people made remarks on it so probably I should try again with mesh bath sponges.

The whole making more papier mache was putting me off a little bit so I carry on with the same piece over and over covering with fabrics, blankets, spray paint, electrical tape, hand embroidery, tights…

Was the size of the object the problem? Why do I need to add so many details to it? Once again I’ve learnt that a lot of colour is not beneficial as I don’t know very well how to avoid some colours clashing with each other. I made the promise to myself that a maximum of 3 colours will be allowed in my work from now own. It’s a scary statement and I feel like for now it might work but don’t want to close myself to the idea of that too much colour is not good.
