Taking inspiration from the work in the exhibition, Edge States: Approaches to Landscapes & Space from Cyprus & Beyond, the workshop explores the sculptural possibilities of knitting using simple techniques with both conventional yarns and experimental materials. The session will cover creating 3D forms using ordinary knitting needles and double pointed needles:-

  • Bulbous forms using increasing and decreasing.
  • Creating tubes.
  • Building structures with multiples.
  • Suitable fillings for soft sculpture.

The workshop is suitable for adults over the age of 18. All levels of ability are welcome, although ideally you will have basic knitting skills (casting on and off, able to knit). The workshop is aimed at anyone with an interest in textiles or mixed media sculpture, wishing to explore the artistic potential of knitting. Although the emphasis is on creating an experimental piece, many of the techniques could be adapted to create a useful object, such as a household item or accessory.

Please bring:-

  • Knitting needles or crochet hooks, ideally to match the size of the yarn; plus double pointed knitting needles if you have them.
  • Yarn, any conventional knitting yarn, although thicker yarns such as 4ply, DK, Arun, Chunky and Super Chunky, would be particularly suitable. Also string, jute or garden twine, and felting yarns if you have them.
  • Scissors, for cutting yarns.
  • Stuffing, ideally polyester as it is non flammable.

The cost of the 2 hour workshop is £20 + eventbrite fee, to book or find out more, please visit: – https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/knitted-sculpture-tickets-1266512776809
