Michael Evans writes: A retrospective exhibition is an opportunity to look back over decades and ask what preoccupations hold the work together. In previous years I painted landscape and still life but more recently I have been interested in the difficulties of painting the human figure. When I move from one subject matter to another I am not generally conscious of any intention that links them. One could paint any number of attractive subjects, but only a few will feel worthwhile or demand to be engaged with. If there is anything that unites these diverse essays (I use the word essay in its original sense of ‘an attempt’) it would be, I think, the passage of time.
