In Starry Night, Miguel Sopena presents a range of recent abstract work created exclusively in a monochrome (black and white) language. The work in Starry Night ranges from framed drawings in charcoal, chalk and ink to oil compositions in different formats, including large paintings on unstretched canvas suspended in the space. All the work in Starry Night shares Miguel’s fascination with the language of the materials, and his interest in reaching the viewer on an emotional level through these free and expressive, carefully balanced compositions.
Miguel Sopena (València, Spain, 1971) became an artist through a non-traditional route, having started to draw and paint as he came to the end of his doctorate in theoretical Physics at Sussex University in Southern England. Seeking a grounding in art, he enrolled on the atelier-style portraiture diploma at the Heatherley School of Fine Art in London in 2013, where he learnt about traditional oil painting and the human figure. Miguel’s painting practice is experimental and is now mainly abstract, exploring themes of memory, identity, and the passage of time, with a formal focus on composition, colour, and the material properties of the media he works with. Miguel is based and has his studio in Croydon, South London.
