Working internationally is key to the development of many artists’ practice, but without gallery representation the hurdles are considerable. With the 55th Venice Biennale soon to open, we speak to three artists – including one showing in Venice – about the challenges of working abroad without a gallery, and also get the views of an independent curator.

Part of the Syntax Series - an ongoing series exploring the structure and language that lies beneath the city surface. This is emphasised by the use of bill posters which make up the main medium. The posters are torn down and reassembled on board, before being pared back to reveal past layers of communication.
I’ve probably landed in some sort of “middle ground”. The problem is that I find middle ground can be a bit confusing. I like extremity and obsession. I like the fact it can take me six weeks of constant hand-stitching […]
Today I surprisingly have time to catch up with myself. Past weeks have been a blur of work and voluntary commitments. These appear to be unavoidable when you live in a village with the family at the local school. Raffle’s, […]
…The meeting turned out to be a really enjoyable couple of hours in which the time flew by. At the end the curator said she had come to the meeting not knowing what she could offer me (and to be […]
It does make a difference having an opportunity to work in a large space – to lay out work, see progress and detours, noticing interrelations. All which is part of developing new work. Composing material in space is like negotiating; […]
This is where I wanted to be tonight: at Dilston Grove, London, to participate in the performance of Act 55 of Anniversary—an act of memory, a public recitation from memory of the Preamble and 30 articles that form the Universal […]
Collaboration – An Artist’s Perspective – How to save money on public art projects With his second two man show, for 2013, due to open in May , contemporary landscape artist David Anthony Hall questions why more art installations are […]

First Mentor Session I’ve just had my first a-n Re:View funded session with my mentor Danielle Arnaud. The house/studio had been nervously over-tidyed, old and recent artworks dusted off and a range of coffees bought in just in case. Within […]
Pigments and Solutions I pledged to share my research as part of my current Arts Council project; the only thing I’m finding is that now I’m well and truly immersed in exploration, it’s become difficult to know what exactly is […]
The ‘humans’ Basically, with the angel dolls, I have made other dolls, which will not be covered in the bible. These will be the people who are being hunted by each angel and who may have limbs missing, be begging […]
#18 Had a group crit a couple of weeks ago (I’m playing catch-up again, oops) and was a bit surprised when we spent 45 minutes basically talking about the best way to display my work. Firstly, I need to plan […]
Another image by Alex Cherry that I have been looking at. I have chosen this one to look at closely as I have been drawing ideas about another canvas I am about to create from it. I wanted to do […]
#19 Looked into the possibilities for printing for lightboxes and after what feels like a million tries at finding the right print setting, I think that we’ve found one that works (after spending over an hour doing test prints). HOWEVER!! […]
#20 I’ve finished my set of drawings for the story “The Boy who went forth to learn Fear”, hoping that they all give across an eerie feeling (especially since some of the scenes I have drawn are particularly morbid). The […]
#21 There’s now less than two weeks until the assessment and the final rush in the studio has begun! We’re all moving to our new spaces and cleaning up (read: PAINTING!) the studio, ready for the big day of our […]
My ‘Angels’ Here attached I have put up an example of an angel who has been covered in the bible. I like this effect it has, as when you see the angel to start with you cannot tell it is […]
Been a bit quiet over the weekend working, training etc. First day back in the space today got a little achieved not an awful amount but enough. I’m beginning to wonder whether the video will detract from the final ‘feel’ […]
