Class of 2021: Shuyang Guo

BA Fine art mixed media, University of Westminster.

Fine art mixed media graduating artist at University of Westminster Shuyang Guo discusses her work:

“The multimedia installation and performance project Nevered Skin (2021), inspired by Mary Douglas’s book Purity and Danger, mainly discusses how positive and negative terms such as ‘cleanliness’ and ‘dirty’ are attached to female bodies and then affect the aesthetic logic of them. Ceramic, as a material highly related to the feminine, is an essential symbol in my work. The grotesque style of the ceramic sculptures is meant to deconstruct the presumption of the female ceramists’ work to be exquisite and delicate and the presumption of the female body.”
