This sign that I saw in Tanzhe Temple in 2009 is a perfect example of the garbled sign. Do not stampede. How they got from ‘do not walk on the grass’ to ‘do not stampede’ is quite a mystery to me. Taking it at face value amuses me because it invites me to imagine the public as a herd of elephants charging forward, digital cameras in hand, flattening all in their path. I think what entertains me here is that it is only partially wrong, merely an exaggeration, as some tourist groups do indeed have elephant like tendencies.
