William Aitchison

This is a tricky example of Chinese kitsch that I saw in the lantern festival: a giant turtle made of 20 kilo rice bags, adorned with bright flashing lights and set to easy listening music. It looks like a folk art tradition that has been transformed by technology that amplifies the effect but drains the meaning. Tricky because who is to say the original was not kitsch and who is to say meaning is drained rather than just transformed. Still, this example is not isolated, I immediately have to think of Balkan turbo-folk, which occupies a similar position in my imagination.
