This picture of England fans after the team’s bowing out of the World Cup was something of an inspiration early on when I was forming my thoughts. There is a particularly desperate quality to the flag here. Maybe my eye noticed this image as it reflects one quality of English nationalism, that of the spurned lover, Scotland and Wales having more distinct and increasingly public identities within the union.
