While hardly a day goes by without us being told that the future belongs to artificial intelligence, our just published Degree Shows Guide 2024 reveals a different story.

Perhaps tellingly, it’s a story of human creativity that seems to foreground mainly analogue mediums, its plot twists and turns featuring painting, sculpture, textiles, performance and video.

As Wing-Sie Chan, Head of Programmes at a-n writes in the guide’s introduction “Welcome, then, to a celebration of a different sort of AI – a unique kind of messy, unpredictable, always evolving artistic inquiry.”

Featuring interviews and profiles of work from 31 students graduating from 28 art schools in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, the guide offers a fascinating insight into the thoughtful, experimental and innovative approaches of our Class of 2024.

New for this year, our Next Steps section on life after graduation has been given to six 2023 graduates who were featured in last year’s guide. Their varied experiences over the last year are both insightful and, we hope, useful for anyone embarking on the next stage of their artist journey.

But, while it’s important that we all plan for the future, lets take this moment to soak in the special buzz and excitement of the degree show.
