A Fine Art graduate of Falmouth University, I situate the conceptual root of my work in a “Near-Death Experience” I suffered during a life threatening haemorrhage at the birth of my first child. This was a catastrophic “pause”, a transformational hiatus in my life. However, the altered state of epiphanic light I felt while on life support has remained with me and informs my art-work. I make the work in a repeated attempt to re-envision that transcendent experience and create light in each painting. While creating my art, I am in a constant dialogue with each painting, and the paintings form in a dialogue with each other. The long temporal pauses between layers of oil glaze add to the depth of meaning: slow Time and the Uncertainty of each layer are built into the finished palimpsest. The fluidity of oil dictates my finished form; I use gestural movement and impasto in which the hidden depths of paint remain as vital as the surface. South Cornwall
