Questions. I do have some questions about this project. Perhaps you do too? You may be wondering why 99? Simple – that’s how many I got out of the sheet of ply, (not just any old ply – 18mm birch faced…), in the size 21x13cm. Why that size? Simple, because it’s the size of our mantle clock; not too small or big!
My questions are:

How do I hang the finished pieces? I want them flat to the wall and fitted so they all line up straight. Should be interesting with 99…
Do I put them up as I go or wrap them up in tissue and file.
Where am I going to show them? The lazy option is to put them all up in the studio and get a few friends round for a beer…
Why am I writing about it? I’ve always been rubbish talking about my work.
Is writing this blog just one big work avoidance tactic?

Rules My first post! I should probably start by explaining a bit more of what I’m up to. A friend recently asked if I painted for myself or for others. It was a tough one. Whilst I do sometimes paint for myself, most of my work is to commission or produced in the hope it will be snapped up because it’s similar but different to other sold work. And so it goes that my style has developed, and my landscapes are both requested but repetitive.

My other work, including random paintings on bits of MDF or Ibuprofen boxes are great to produce but the end result is not the most user friendly. So I wanted to produce a series of work that remains eclectic in subject but uniform in size and structure. The common thread for the images will be that they are derived from personal photos.

To be honest this post is already a week too late. I was supposed to start this last week, with only a photo of all the cut and primed bits of ply, but I thought I’d get a couple of paintings under my belt. So far I’m pleased with the results of the first few, and will post photos shortly.

So whilst we wait for me to dust the camera down there are some rules that I have applied to this project:

Images used for existing paintings cannot be used.

No Landscapes.

Format to all be erm…landscape!

Images only from photos I have taken.

Size 21x13cm.

There may be more that I’ll think up as I go along but for now I think that’ll do.
