I’ve been adjusting to a new place. A place with new light and a horizon. Moving from a northern city to a place by the seaside is a significant shift in inself, and daily I reminded of the different light qualities.

I had wanted to take a bunch of photographs in the snow. The reflective quality was the most extraordinary thing. And now as the snows melting and I’m sat at home, I can sense the light changing as the rain dissolves the white carpet and the light hues change again. I am hoping that there’ll be enough snow on the hills to be able to make use of the giant reflective studio there’s been, I am hoping I’m not too late …..

Here are photographs from the ‘Cottage Canvas’ (painting with shadows) series …

I was outside, in the Highlands, in December 2009.

On another perfect day.

Where there are no questions.

And there is the most perfect light.

I had been thinking recently how nice it’d be to start painting again. I dug out watercolours and acrylics but haven’t yet put brush into water

however,

I did paint onto the cottage wall with my shadow. Standing on the windowsill and dancing with my back to the sun.

I sometimes get those days where things are pretty perfect and the sunlight’s something spectacular and there are ideas and art everywhere. So much so that you almost need a little bottle to capture it all and save it for later when you can take that very essence and re-shape it into something else. I wonder if this re-shaping always works? I wanted to see what a project would be like with no re-shaping. Simple photographs like diary entries. Embodying what photo’s do best, and worst depending upon your perspective and critical leaning. Nevertheless photographs are pretty spectacular, as is sunlight and so I have wanted to share a series of photographs which use some of the very finest things in life, sunlight and chance.
