Eight hours before I left Canada for the UK I discovered I would have to cull and re-pack my significanly over-weight suitcase.* This, despite the fact that I had decided long before that books were not coming with me. I held this one in my hands for a long time before making the “no book” rule, so imagine my pleasure and surprise today at finding a copy for £3.50 at the Tobacco Factory Sunday Market in Bristol.

I also bought a bunny!

It is in the freezer.

*thanks again to background girl for her support during the re-pack. she should also be thanked for: packing my entire kitchen, cleaning my fridge and freezer, making me eat something and speaking gently to me while i lay fetal on the bedroom floor.

G O N E P O S T A L: “Draw Me” Series

Today I wrote to three visual artists: Laura O’Brien, Tyler Landry, and a 13 year old budding illustrator I met when I visited the UK last August. These are excerpts from today’s letters:

“I am doing some initial mail-outs on the Distance Collaboration front. These ones are asking others to 1) do something for me 2) mail me the results.”

“the coat is important. I remember it as wide corduroy* and I remember loving the buttons – actually, I don’t remember the coat at all come to think of it, but…I love corduroy and buttons so maybe part of my brain remembers the coat.”

*I have since learned that this is referred to as “low wale” corduroy.

While I was working in the conservatory this morning both the bunnies and Feral the cat strolled by.

I have been interviewing parents about how they navigate the “what we eat / what we cuddle” story with their kids and thinking a lot about my own narrative with respect to my relationships with cats. I also recently saw an amazing cooking show about preparing rabbit and have not been able to see my conservatory bunnies in quite the same way since.

What I like about this photo:

-there seem to be implied paths everywhere

-some paths seem to go into the future and others to the past

-the dazzle trailing off into the woods makes me giggle and wish i had ordered anti-glare on my new glasses

-my hands are in the shot

-Rowena described my photos as “quiet” and now i don’t have to write to her to ask her what she meant

It is hard being new in a place. I feel a little old and constantly humbled by the strangest things. I wrote to Millefiore about it last night…

“-i cried the second week i was here because i was missing a wooden spoon packed away in my shed. at the time my life was made wretched for want of a wooden spoon

-on the first day of school – yesterday – i could not use change to pay for my coffee

-i got on a train going in the wrong direction on the way home

AND…

-for some reason i only brought summer clothes. i am a weather-hardy acadian-canadian and i am freezing and don’t have a hoodie

BUT….

my art-brain is waking up and today i thought about how it may in the end be all about sound. i thought about this first while shooting your “in between spaces” footage this summer, but more about that later.

Soon I will start a new blog. Soon I will wish there were more hours in the day, and soon and now I miss you.

xxx”
