This Fine Art degree project is an organic kinetic sculpture that is forever growing. This work requires precise measurements and structural stability for it to become a successful and ever growing piece. In reminiscence of Jean Tinguely’s  whimsical creations i am using methods similar to his own to challenge the idea of functional and Kinetic Art.

To come to the current conclusion as to where my work has been “Hung” I have explored the notions of how the space is relative to what i am hanging, how the space will effect the way the public or viewer will receive the work and i have explored the best angle possible, along with this i have agreed with my colleague on positioning and made sure it doesn’t over power or interrupt the power of her images. The white of the wall sets off the work well giving it a blank canvas. I have devised that simplicity is key due to the busy nature of the work so the less it has to interact with in the background the better. Lighting is an important factor but there s luckily no lack of that. Luckily i don’t have to worry about hanging heights

The finalised version of the degree show is now in place, after some repairs have been done and the contemplation of which and what to hang i have come to a decision and am sticking to where everything is now set. Although one work is no longer kinetic i still deem it a thematic “hang”.

I have been thinking and contemplating over whether or not to have the kinetic piece on or not during the degree show, now the work has been tried and tested over and over again and i do have the option to put it on a timer so it only comes on for a short amount of time, but today, and more recently i have been having problems with it, the motor has been fine, it is the strings that have been getting caught up and breaking parts off, now if this was a homage to Tinguely’s Homage to New York, and there were no safety issues with the public then i’d happily let it run and leave it on, but i feel i have to make the decision to have it kept of during the show, and perhaps have me manually turn it off and on now and then. Things have been flying off and i have had to make repairs, and i don’t want to make this a public health hazard, so i will keep it off when i want it off and hopefully it will be okay until it is examined externally.

Since i am not hanging and am more worried about placing i haven’t got to worry as much about a chronological hang or what looks better next to what, i do however have to think about where is best suited for my pieces to be viewed. In discussion previously i am against a background of trees with one of the pieces, i have decided to shut the blinds to stop any interference and clashing so my work doesn’t get lost among the trees. The Kinetic piece is had two options, next to the window side or stood next to the white wall. I have decided to use the windowed side to my advantage, this is because there is piping and a radiator behind it, now personally i feel this brings further a more industrial touch to the piece. Although i have tried and tested putting the work against the white wall and it does look equally as good, i have had to weigh up the options as the other piece is a lot larger and would have gotten completely lost, even more so than the kinetic work.
