My girlfriend has been looking at Avant Garde films as part of her course. This is something that I have also been looking into as I become interested in trying to figure out what is going on in them. I like not knowing a narrative behind the film, just watching it for the sake of it, and without a narrative you do not form the same attachment that you would do to another type of film.
These films can be counted as ‘Dadaist’ films as it aims to shock the audience and question the meaning behind what is art. These two clips I have attached I have chosen both have stuck in my head after seeing them. The first one which is known as ‘The Doctor and the Pencil’ which I saw as part of a television series called ‘the mighty boosh’. This film clip had stayed in my head as I had no idea what was happening however still found it entertaining.
The second clip is called Un Chien Andalou (1928) by Luis bunuel. I like this due to the time that it was filmed, way back in 1928. I liked how you start watching it, but then the shock factor comes in when you see the clip involving the eye at 1:34 – 1:42.
enjoy :)
