The etymology of the word ‘nostalgia’ comes from the Greek language. ‘Nostos’ means ‘homecoming’, ‘return’, ‘home’ and ‘algia’ means ‘pain’, ‘grief’, therefore ‘nostalgia’ could be interpreted as the pain you feel when you miss your home or a warm place. Nostalgia seems at first a very broad and abstract concept. Despite it being abstract, we can easily distinguish when we are feeling nostalgic.  An international multidisciplinary group of artists have come together between the 7th – 18th February to express how they experience nostalgia with an exhibition at Camden Image Gallery (174 Royal College Street, NW1 0SP, Camden, London).

The cold winter mornings and long grey days, the mist and the rain, makes us yearn for warmer days. The political instability and inflation, the rising of prices and losses of loved ones over the past few years, makes us feel nostalgic for a better past and a more stable present. But were past times really better? Or are we always seeking for imaginary better past, that were not as good as we remember them? As showcased in Woody Allen’s movie a ‘Midnight in Paris’ while visiting Paris, the main character has this nostalgic feeling to visit the Paris from the Lost Generation of the 1920’s. When the character visits the 1920’s, people in the 1920’s wanted to visit the Belle Époque in the 1870’s and then people from the Belle Époque felt nostalgic about Renaissance. Is it ingrained within our nature to feel nostalgic for better past times? Nostalgia exhibition brings a group of artists together to portray better colourful futures.
