In a dérive one or more persons during a certain period drop their usual motives for movement and action, their relations, their work and leisure activities, and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the encounters they find there… 1

Clive A Brandon makes paintings, collages, objects, books, films and interventions that respond to urban and natural environments and places.

In April 2013 he left London and set off for a 20 month journey through Northern Europe, undertaking a series of residencies exploring afield of landscape work responding to travel, exploration, walking, man-made environments and the dramatic and remote landscapes of Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Shetland and Scotland. This exhibition brings together a selection of works from the 6 residencies which were:-

  • November 2014, WASPS The Booth, Shetland
  • September 2014, AiR Hafnarborg, The Hafnarfjordur Centre of Culture and Fine Art, Iceland
  • November 2013, AiR Ricklundgarden, Saxnas, Sweden
  • October 2013, AiR Konstepidemin, Goteborg, Sweden
  • June 2013, WASPS The Steeple, Newburgh, Scotland
  • April 2013, Artist in Residence at KINOKINO Centre for Art and Film, Sandnes, Norway

He was initially inspired by a yearning to explore the north and remote areas, and set off on this trip with ideas about the tradition of landscape painters drawn to the north, an interest in Viking areas and routes, history, mythology and a sense of being drawn to these places and a desire to break out of usual work routines.

The work emerged from walks and excursions, photos, sketches’ and watercolours, chance discoveries of other artists and their work, found materials and snippets of local information. These were combined in a bricolage of material and imagery that distils thedon experiences of each residency into a visual guidebook.

For this exhibition at the Briggait gallery the work from each of these visits will be presented together for the first time, giving the sense of a journey through different places and the contrasts and connections that link them together. This work collectively builds into a travelogue of Brandon’s journey, but also each series of work has a distinct character that reflects the experience of the place it was made.
