ELEMENTS is an online virtual exhibition of abstract art curated by artist-researcher Sara Choudhrey. The exhibition features 17 local and international artists from across the United Kingdom, Portugal, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.

ELEMENTS provides an exploration of the title theme as perceived from various contexts and lenses through a display of a variety of media and practice. Works include digital art, photography, collage, paintings and mixed-media, presenting varying interpretations whilst blurring literal and conceptual lines in our perception of space, place, nature and the immaterial. Alongside this, themes around identity, heritage, accessibility and the sensory everyday have also arisen.

For ELEMENTS 2021 we were keen to address the lack of representation of Black artists, more specifically those making abstract art. Our open call was therefore designed to provide opportunities and representation as a step towards addressing race inequality in the arts.

Three successful artists selected through the ELEMENTS Open Call were Yasmeen Melius, Sharon James and Susan Thompson. Their work features in the exhibition alongside several pre-selected artists from a range of diverse ethnic and faith backgrounds including Daniah Al Saleh, Nazira Bibi, Sara Choudhrey, Luca M Damiani, Sara Domingos, Juma Harding-Dimmock, Louise Hall, Sadaf Hesamiyan, Linett Kamala, Esen Salma Kaya, Yvette Miller, Stephanie Nebbia, Vaishali Prazmari, Saif Ali Siddiqui.

ELEMENTS was first conceived in May 2020 as a response to the Covid-19 pandemic, providing opportunities to artists to continue exhibiting their work whilst allowing audiences a safe and distanced method to view the exhibition from the comfort and safety of their home. We are pleased to continue presenting ELEMENTS in an accessible yet seamless and interactive digital mode.
