‘Fields and Gardens’ will be constructed as an imaginary space, from an index of around a hundred forms collected together in a small book – trees, bushes, rocks, mountains, lakes. The artist organises the pictures – plot, island, field, glade, parterre – to form a syntax of an open-ended series of drawings. “I think of them as drawings of gardens. Some are systematically planned with formal, abstract patterns. Others are allowed to become overgrown where the forms, like weeds, multiply and compete for space.”

Born in North Wales, Andy began his studies in Cardiff, at the School of Art followed by several years at the Royal College of Art. His skill and talent in drawing has been highlighted by his inclusion in the prestigious UK touring show The Jerwood Drawing Prize and by a recent solo show ’Garden’  at Crescent Arts, Scarborough.

Research suggests that people who develop drawing skills really seem to have more developed structures in regions of the brain that control fine motor performance and what is called procedural memory. BayArt knows the value of drawing, we are a an artist led gallery that is committed to showing the best of drawing in the UK and providing drawing experiences for schoolchildren and families through the Big Draw and other bespoke events. “Drawing is everywhere. We are surrounded by it. It is sewn into the warp and weft of our lives: we practice it as one of our earliest experiences as schoolchildren, and as parents we treasure the drawings made by our off-spring like nothing else.”

Andy Black will talk about his work on Saturday 26th March at 2pm
The exhibition runs from 29th March – 22nd April 2016
