Intestinal Knitting plays with the traditional hierarchy of the arts by using the feminine, homely craft of knitting to create artwork inspired by entrails. While male dominated art forms such as painting and sculpture are considered high art, female orientated past times such as knitting and embroidery are considered low art. There is also a hierarchy of internal organs, with the greatest societal disgust reserved for intestines, due to their ability to pulverise, liquidise and vaporise matter and to level all humans.

The workshop focuses on creating three dimensional tubes, using either flat or double pointed needles, shaping through increasing and decreasing, plus other techniques such as crochet. Although the emphasis is on creating experimental artwork, many of the techniques could be adapted for practical purposes. The session is very informal, with attendees encouraged to explore materials and make their own discoveries – there is no right or wrong way, only a vast range of possibilities!

Level – Ideally some basic knitting or crochet skills.

Materials and equipment – Basic materials and equipment will be supplied, but you may wish to bring your own:

  • Yarn, any conventional knitting yarn, plus experimental yarn such as ribbon, gift tape, string or twine – or anything you feel you could knit with!
  • Knitting Needles, to suit the size of your chosen yarn, although medium to larger needles, may work better with experimental materials. Please transport your needles in a safe way with point protectors.
  • Scissors, for cutting yarns.
  • Optional, double pointed knitting needles or crochet hooks.
