UK-based Macedonian artist Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva, who is a member of the AIR Council, has been selected to represent Macedonia at the 55th International Art Exhibition in Venice next year.

Commenting on her selection, Hadzi-Vasileva said: “It is such an amazing feeling, unexplainable. To be recognised by your own country when you live abroad is the best achievement ever. This happens to very few people and so I feel quite privileged.”

The opportunity came about following a meeting with curator Ana Frangovska at the National Gallery of Macedonia. “We had worked together previously on my project Inherent Beauty at Public Room in Skopje. She is a great person to work with and we both felt it was the appropriate time to propose a project for the Biennale. I am very much looking forward to our collaboration.”

Although Hadzi-Vasileva is remaining tight lipped regarding what she will eventually exhibit, she did comment: “I really hope to create a piece of work that people will remember – a work that will challenge their expectations and make them think!”

The 55th Venice Biennale takes place from 1 June – 24 November 2013.
