Sculptor Antony Gormley has received a Knighthood and Turner Prize winning artist Susan Philipsz appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2014 Queen’s Honours List.

Gormley, best known for his iconic Angel of the North, is no stranger to the Queen’s Honour’s List having been appointed OBE in 1997. An acclaimed sound and installation artist, Philipsz, who stood up for art education in her award speech at the Turner Prize ceremony in 2010, has been recognised for her services to British art.

In recognition of the affordable studios sector, Acme Studios‘ co-founders Jonathan Harvey and David Panton have also been appointed OBEs. Harvey and Panton set up Acme Studios in 1972 as a charitable housing association, making temporary use of two derelict shops. Acme Studios now has 16 permanent buildings, providing affordable spaces for over 700 artists to live and work. From 2015 the London-based charity will be completely self-sustaining, no longer requiring public funding.

In a joint statement they said: “This endorsement is a tribute to the extraordinary support and commitment we continue to receive from our board and staff and to those individuals and organisations with whom we have developed mutually-supportive creative partnerships.”

Also honoured, are artists Derek Clarke, Elizabeth Meek and Neil Shawcross, who have each been appointed MBEs. Elsewhere, Professor Stuart Bartholomew, Prinicpal and Vice Chancellor of the Arts University Bournemouth receives a CBE and the former head of London College of Communication and Deputy Rector of the University of the Arts, London, Professor Elizabeth Rouse receives an OBE for services to Higher Education.
