UK-based Danish mixed-media sculptor Malene Hartmann Rasmussen has won aspex‘s 2014 CRAFT EMERGENCY competition.

Rasmussen was selected from a shortlist of 13 international artists and makers currently showing in the Portsmouth gallery’s second annual CRAFT EMERGENCY exhibition.

As part of her award, Rasmussen will work with the curatorial team at aspex to produce a solo show in 2016, either at the gallery or at an offsite location in the city.

A graduate of the RCA Ceramics & Glass programme, Rasmussen combines handmade ceramic pieces with found objects and other materials to create surreal narrative tableaux.

“I want my work to look like a very skilled child could have made it,” she says, “clumsy and elaborate at the same time.”

CRAFT EMERGENCY 2014 continues until 4 January 2015. aspex.org.uk
