The Crisis Commission – an exhibition of film, sculpture, painting and illustration on the theme of ‘Home’ opened at the charity’s Bermondsey Project last night (8 May).

Newly commissioned pieces by leading contemporary artists including Martin Creed, George Shaw, Gavin Turk and Lottie Davies hang alongside works made by members of Crisis art classes – people who have experienced homelessness themselves.

The exhibition runs until 24 May then continues at The Strand Gallery in Central London from 30 May – 9 June. Following the two shows all artworks will be auctioned at Christie’s, with proceeds going to Crisis.

“I’ve been circulating around the subject [of Home] for the last 18 years or so,” Turner prize nominee George Shaw said. “You could say that we all circulate around the idea throughout our life. With this in mind it was clear to me that I could only make a piece of work that told my own idea, my own story of what home means.”

Leslie Morphy is Chief Executive of Crisis: “When you visit the art classes we run across the country you see that great art can come out of adversity, but also that adversity can be overcome through art. The funds raised from the Crisis Commission will help us continue to aid people overcome adversity and homelessness – not just through art but learning, education, housing and employment services.”
