Axis, the online resource for contemporary art, celebrates its 21st birthday today (21 November) with a series of online events, including the culmination of its online nineties quiz and a Twitter party at 2pm (#Axisweb21).

Axis has also commissioned a series of articles to mark this landmark date, including a piece by Director Sheila McGregor which charts the progress of the organisation from its pre-Internet inception to the present day.

Axis began life in 1991. Following research instigated by a-n and carried out by Susan Jones, with funding from Gulbenkian Foundation and Arts Council of Great Britain, AXIS: Visual Arts Exchange and Information Service came into being, as a one-stop shop for information about contemporary artists in the UK. Its first home was in Leeds Polytechnic, which offered helpful support in-kind

From everyone at a-n to everyone at Axis – Happy Birthday to you! Here’s to another 21 years.
