Campaigners will form a human chain outside the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square in London tomorrow, Wednesday 18 September, to ‘protect’ the arts from government cuts.

The event from 6pm has been organised by the Lost Arts campaign, a coalition of unions and arts lovers. Lost Arts aims to highlight the damaging effect of the one-third cut in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s budget since 2010, and cuts in funding for local government.

The campaign also aims to promote the positive cultural and economic value of the arts, stating that every £1 invested in arts and culture generates £6 for the UK economy.

Maddy Radcliff, Lost Arts co-ordinator, said: “Cutting funding to one of the UK’s highest profile and most successful industries does not make economic sense. We formed the group Lost Arts to say it is time the government stopped ignoring the true value of the arts in this time of austerity. We urge anyone who supports our cause to join us.”
