There are only a few weeks left to visit the John Moores Painting Prize 2012, won by Sarah Pickstone, before the exhibition closes on 6 January.

Artist Andrew Bracey made repeated visits to the show at Liverpool’s Walker Art Gallery and recorded his thoughts on a-n’s Interface. He feels this year’s show is ‘both coherent and an attempt to address (without compromising on quality) some of the charges murmured against the prize in the past … there were hints towards the ‘expanded field of painting’ … painting as conceptual practice and of not picking the usual suspects.’

Ellen Bell took an observational approach in her review of the show, focusing on the audience’s reaction and noting: ‘Young men, contemporary dandies with high collars and gel-shocked hair, nudged in close to heavily lipsticked women, luxuriously spangled. “Such a strong show”, “so beautifully hung”, “the best yet”, they said; their words floating up high above the buzzing throng to hover still in the perfect whiteness of the stuccoed ceiling.’

Bell and Bracey were each awarded Interface bursaries to visit and independently review the exhibition.
