Derek Jarman: Black Paintings, Wilkinson Gallery, London
This intriguing exhibition explores some of life’s darkest mysteries: loss, the fear of death and childhood trauma. The majority of works featured date from the later part of Jarman’s life, their dark melancholy undoubtedly influenced by his battle with HIV.

Art and Life, Leeds Art Gallery, Leeds
Featuring work from two of the UK’s most important 20th Century painters, Ben and Winifred Nicholson, this exhibition explores their collaborations with artists Christopher Wood, Alfred Wallis, and the potter William Staite Murray. Re-assess how these artists informed the story of 20th century modern art in this country – in particular their key contribution to modernism.

Chris Johanson, The Modern Institute, Glasgow
For this exhibition at The Modern Institute, Californian artist Chris Johanson has invaded the gallery space with multi-coloured structures that act as frames for numerous found materials and paintings of seascapes. Using imagery and words, the work addresses ideas around life, death and thoughts of an existential nature.

Almut Linde: Radical Beauty, Chapter, Cardiff
This 20-year survey show features Almut Linde’s action photographs, sculptures and installations, through which the artist addresses basic questions of human existence. With a particular focus on the differences between individual and systematic constraint in social systems. Linde’s work is sometimes playful but always retains a strong underlying message.

Art under Attack: Histories of British Iconoclasm, Tate Britain, London
This exhibition explores the history of physical attacks on art in Britain from the 16th century to the present day. Tracing the deliberate destruction of icons, symbols or monuments for religious, political or aesthetic motives over the last five centuries, it offers an alternative reading of the impact of art on culture and society.
