Chinese-born Royal College of Art graduate Zhu Tian has been announced as winner of the 2015 Catlin Art Prize.

She was awarded the £5,000 prize for a series of installations that reflect her ongoing interest in disrupting the everyday, a piece which the prize judges referred to as “an impressive and coherent body of work… [that] creates a compelling and unsettling journey for the viewer.”

The Catlin Art Prize offers eight artists, selected from the 40 recent graduates featured in the annual Catlin Art Guide, the chance to exhibit in a curated group show one year on from graduation. This year’s show opened at Londonewcastle Project Space, London on 8 May, curated by the guide’s author Justin Hammond.

The panel of judges for this year’s prize included: Aaron Cezar, Delfina Foundation; Charlotte Schepke, London art space Large Glass; and George Vasey, curator, Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art.

Tian’s winning installations featured two separate rooms and an adjacent corridor partitioned by a steel roller, reflecting themes of power, interpersonal relationships and unease.

Speaking about winning the award, she said: “It has been an exciting and challenging opportunity to develop my work with incredible support. Winning the prize will give me a chance to secure my studio and continue working on my next exhibition.”

Visitors to the exhibition selected Royal Academy of Arts graduate Paul Schneider as winner of the £2,000 Visitor Vote award.

The Catlin Art Prize continues at Londonewcastle Project Space, London until 30 May 2015. www.artcatlin.com
