Sound Circle is the first stage of an interactive illuminated night-time labyrinth, planned for 2011. 60 illuminated ‘tree totems’ will be created by children from the Forest Schools project in Corby, Northants and installed at the end of October 2010 within Fineshade Woods. To add to the ethereal atmosphere, artist Martin Prothero will help a small group of children to create interactive sounds to be heard within the circle.

The project has ended. We took the totems down in freezing conditions – the ground was so solid that we had to leave some cables underground as they would not come out. Have packed them all up – some were slightly damaged – I think people tried to take short cuts through the sides and broke bits. I am very glad I can stop my every-other -day trips to change the batteries for the lights. Only two of the sounds working at the end – not as weather proof as we had hoped. The lights however were all still on – hurrah for the electricians!

Schools to have the totems.

Thanks to everyone who helped.

Circle is magical in the snow – lots of footprints so people have been to visit it – it’s hard to know how many people see it but here is some proof and in this weather too! It has another atmosphere now and the electrical boxes that annoyed me (being white – leaves I put down to cover them kept blowing off) now look like the snow and a whole new shape is shown in white against the totems. Amazing.

I have found a hole in one of the totems – and really can’t work out what has happened to it. It is in a place that is too high to have been made by an animal and I don’t think that anything has fallen on it as it is a hole in the middle of a totem that is facing inwards towards the one next to it. It would be a very weird kind of vandalism too as it is only on one – I am truely mystified!

I finally got to see Sound Circle in the dark and am delighted. It really is very magical and can be glimpsed tantalisingly through the trees from the path looking very other-worldly.

My photos don’t really do it justice.

I am delighted to report that my lights and sound are all still working – what a relief. Sound Circle seems to get a steady stream of visitors who just find it – which is what I wanted and seem to like it – several have said they wil come back after dark.

The maintanance of the lights is starting to get to me – only a few more weeks – must keep going…
