My piece is called In the Stillness of Remembering I think this sums up my piece exactly. My piece is based on memories and i have set up my installation as though time has been paused in a way. All in all this came as wuite a surprise as i never though i would be creating a installtion for my Degree Show, yet i am glad i did i am very pleased with it, and i do not think that my ideas could be carried out more powerfully without being an installtion. I have had a lot of fun and stress creating this piece and can’t wait to see how the viewers percieve it.

I added a few little touches to my piece that i believe really make the piece come to life. I do feel as if there is a particular atmosphere as i wanted to my piece which i am very happy with. Whilst looking like a wall from a dated family living room, i think also that there is an aspect of this piece that is very ‘Shrine like’. I think this works really well and helps give the piece the eeire atmosphere that i wanted. It in a way acts as a shrine to memories, my family memories more specifically. The idea of the coffe with lipstick stains and just smoked ciggerettes, is meant to make the viewer feel like somebody was just there and perhaps that they are coming back or maybe even disappeared, or even that they have interupted something. The Fact that there were people there speaking on the phone listening, reconecting to me is something spectacular. It is a belief, proof even of love and pain. Memories are there to remember for pain or for love. They are to remember who you are, who you were, memories of loved ones. Without such things you would be lost.

My piece is a based on a memory of my Great Grandmothers house. However i like the idea of the veiwer imagination, i like to think of this piece also as perhaps a waiting room from a different realm where people can come and re-connect with their old memories.

The dated wallpaper an items may seem old fashioned but in this piece it acts as a timeless scene. I have created a wall of a room. It could be a waiting room a living room, it is all perceptive from the audience. The photos displayed are all from different times and ages for instance, there is one of my father when he was about 9 and one of my mother when she was 17 and my Grandpa at 55 and so on. This shows how although times change people and memories do too. people come to look different as do memories.

The table diplayed acts as a slpit second look, giving the feel as though there is a presence. The coffee cups and the ashtray is a setup for the common meseting, as people around the world meet up for coffee chit-chats, to reminice. However again it is all a matter of perception. ‘were people just chit chatting?’ or were they waiting for something else?

The telephone and string attached to the photos, is very important, it adds more questions to the piece. I have used it to act as a metaphor for connecting people to their memories of life with these people.
