a-n’s 2018 programme of professional development opportunities for members continues its roll out with applications now open for this year’s a-n Artist Bursaries.

These awards of £500 – £1,000 enable a-n Artist or Joint (Artist and Arts Organiser) members to undertake a self-determined schedule of professional development in 2018. 65+ bursaries are available this year, and the deadline for applications is 3pm, Monday 12 February 2018.

Now in its sixth year, the bursaries programme has previously enabled artists to learn new skills, undertake mentoring, curatorial critique, travel within or outside of the UK to research, attend conferences, build networks or collaboration, or a combination of these things. a-n encourages innovative and ambitious thinking focused around what would make the most significant difference for you.

Recent bursary recipients include: Lauren Curl who used her award to carry out research into environmentally responsible screen printing in Mexico; Laura Napier who learned book-binding, letterpress and photopolymer etching skills in order to create a new artist’s book; Sogol Mabadi who travelled to Tehran to inform a new body of performance work; and Aidan Moesby who researched the potential use of digital technology in developing works across different media .

a-n has awarded over £275,000 to over 330 artist members through these bursaries since 2013.

20 awards of £600 each will be available, with applications opening in February 2018. Past rounds of this bursary have enabled a-n members to attend preview weeks at the Venice Biennale and Documenta.

Both Berlin Biennale, which launches 9 June 2018, and Manifesta, launching 16 June 2018, offer an exceptional chance to see work by internationally-regarded artists and to benefit from networking with the many UK and international curators, artists and arts leaders who attend.
