A new £25,000 international prize for art and film has been launched by the Dutch film museum EYE, in collaboration with the Patrick & Joan Leigh Fermor Arts Fund.

The annual EYE Prize will be presented to an artist or filmmaker who has already developed a significant body of work combining the worlds of art and film, and the prize money will fund the making of new work.

Chosen from a list of nominated artists, the inaugural winner will be announced in January 2015 and presented with the award at the museum’s third anniversary gala in April. The first EYE Prize winner’s exhibition will take place in 2018.

Sandra den Hamer, CEO of EYE, said: “With the undeniable intimate relationship between the moving image and contemporary arts, it is about time for a prize for work which brings these two art forms together.”

Selection process

The prize will be selected through two stages. A shortlist of nominated candidates will be chosen by an international advisory board, comprising Jaap Guldemond, director of exhibitions at EYE; Solange Farkas, director and curator of Associação Cultural Videobrasil; Gyula Gazdag, filmmaker and artistic director of the Sundance Filmmakers Lab; Marc Glöde, film historian and critic; Sunjung Kim, curator and professor at the Korea National University of Arts; and Andrea Lissoni, curator of film and international art at Tate Modern.

The winner will then be chosen by a jury consisting of: Sandra den Hamer; Chantal Akerman, director and artist; Stuart Comer, chief curator for media and performance art at MoMA, NY; Isaac Julien, artist and director; Martijn Sanders, cultural entrepreneur and art collector; Olivia Stewart, producer, screenwriter and trustee of the PJLF Arts Fund; and Béla Tarr, screenwriter and director.
