Summer Exhibition, Royal Academy, London
The world’s oldest open-submission exhibition returns with another bumper show. This year’s is coordinated by artist and Royal Academician Michael Craig-Martin and features painting, printmaking, sculpture, installation, photography, film and more, with over 1,100 works on display. From art world names such as Conrad Shawcross and Jim Lambie to emerging artists and unknowns, this is essential summer viewing.

Samara Scott/Roger Coward, Eastside Projects, Birmingham
Two contrasting shows at this artist-run space. In the main gallery, new work by Samara Scott explores consumer experience in a series of  floor-based pieces that, on first glance, resemble colourful slicks and industrial spillages. Roger Coward, meanwhile, revisits his 1975 Artist Placement Project in Birmingham, with an archive show that focuses on the area of Small Heath. A symposium, The Studio in Society, takes place on 4 July.

Terry Frost, Leeds Art Gallery, Leeds
Celebrating the centenary of abstract painter Terry Frost’s birth, this show includes over six decades of work, charting Frost’s development through painting, collages and sculpture. Bold and colourful, the results feel like the visual equivalent of jazz music. No bad thing.

Tabitha Jussa, The Bluecoat, Liverpool
This photography exhibition by Tabitha Jussa, winner of the seventh annual Liverpool Art Prize, explores the relationship between people and place. Jussa focuses on the city’s social housing and the impact of numerous regeneration initiatives on resident communities across the decades.
