Cynthia Cruz, Acme Project Space, London
This exhibition by 2014/2015 Goldsmiths Studio Award recipient Cynthia Cruz features recent works including painting, sculpture, digital printing and video. Drawing on themes of tragedy, horror and the absurd, graphic source material is transformed into vivid other-worldly imagery. It’s a fine line between humour and bad taste but Cruz treads it well.

Canaletto, Abbott Hall Art Gallery, Kendal
This collection of works by the 18th century artist Giovanni Antonio Canal – popularly known as Canaletto – features some of the finest paintings and drawings of the period. Capturing a critical point in London’s architectural development, key landmarks can be spotted at their inception, including St Paul’s Cathedral and the naval palaces of Greenwich, plus new bridges across the Thames at Westminster and Walton.

Risk, Turner Contemporary, Margate
Group show that takes a look at how artists have intentionally embraced the unpredictable and uncontrollable, from chance procedures to political risk. A whole host of high-profile names feature, including: Marina Abramović, Eva Hesse, Yves Klein, Marcel Duchamp,Yoko Ono and Ai Weiwei.

Bill Viola, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield
Featuring installations from the last 20 years of American video and installation artist Bill Viola’s career, this exhibition is the most extensive UK show of his work in over a decade. It includes a brand new piece, The Trial, plus eight works that explore concepts of birth and death, installed in the site’s Underground Gallery.

Hideyuki Katsumata, Dundee Contemporary Arts, Dundee
Last chance to catch this psychedelic array of animations, paintings and prints at Dundee Contemporary Arts. Depicting robots, UFOs, dragons and bodies with multiple limbs or eyes, Katsumata’s work chimes with both Japanese culture and Dundee’s own comics and video games heritage. Also on show are a selection of the artist’s pop videos.
